Why Education is More than Just the Transfer of Knowledge

For some students, it truly can feel like torture sitting through a formal class lecture. It was during these lengthy and roaming narratives that I would be forced to glean as much as necessary to pass any upcoming assessments. This is how most of my colleagues learned, too. What is unfortunate, is this is also how many of them continue to teach.

Education has be a tool for empowerment and manipulation for centuries and often reflects broader societal divisions in schools and other areas of the academic community.

Education, as a social institution, is large and embedded in our culture. We all have specific knowledge and expectations about education based on what we have consumed and experienced over time…which can vary widely.

Education has become a primary arena for ideological disagreements because it is seen as a means to shape future generations.

Politicians and activists and regular citizens routinely work to leverage curriculum content to further personal or corporate or political ideological agendas. Books are being banned by the hundreds. Students are being sat in front of computers to “learn” everything from math to astronomy to how to make friends. One of my classmates shared…
