We Need to Normalize the Individualized Education Plan for All Students

TRAPPED IN CHICAGO’S WORST SCHOOLS: EDUCATION OUTCOMES IN CHICAGO’S LOWEST-PERFORMING PUBLIC SCHOOLS

We recently just helped a family through the process of pursuing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for their child in the City of Chicago. It is important for all families to be aware of a few things related to this process. We would like to share them with our readership to raise awareness about the process and normalize seeking these resources.

What happens when your student develops social anxiety, an eating disorder, and begins showing signs of autism during the pandemic? What do you do as a parent when your student refuses to go to school because they are attached to a parent for safety and security? How can a parent connect their student to educational resources when their student refuses to eat, speak, and interact with other peers and educators? What happens when they get bullied to an extreme making it impossible for your student to learn at school safely and comfortably?
