Top Six Chicago Summer Camp Recommendations

…for students aged 4 and up at a variety of price points.

By Giselle Castaneda and Dr. Benjamin M. Drury

Today is the last day of school for Chicago Public Schools. Our student — who is a recent graduate of kindergarten — is now able to read, write, and count to 1,567…1,568…1,569 — and we could not be more satisfied with our experience this academic year. To answer your question, yes, they are enrolled in one a handful of magnet schools in the city. Magnet schools are home to a highly concentrated academic and social support structure that focuses providing the highest quality learning experience possible. I worked as a high school principal. I know people who work in schools that literally never smile. When I stand outside of the school every morning waiting for the bell to ring so that I can wave to our student as they walk into school, staff and faculty are all outside talking with parents and welcoming students to school. Either their coffee was spiked, or the principal truly has created a culture that is supportive of their entire team. Either way, while we are completely satisfied with the performance of the school and the academic and social progress of our student, another reality has slowly come into focus over the last few weeks…summer vacation is coming.
