Students Need Mental Health Services Integrated as Part of Meaningful Academic Curriculum
Mental health was a recurring topic in a sociology course I participated in. Not so much in a negative light, in fact the opposite is a more accurate description of what happened.
Self-reflection opened me to learning from my peers and my professors and my own lived experiences opened my eyes to the hidden struggles students and educators face daily. What stood out most was how mental health often takes a backseat to academic success, despite its undeniable impact on learning and personal development.
Reflecting on our discussions, it became clear that prioritizing mental health in schools isn’t just necessary…it’s transformative.
Sociologists use the “structural perspective” to analyze and understand social phenomenon. Basically, using this perspective to view anything in society assumes that the consequences are intended and providing stability for society. Our class explored why educational systems often struggle to integrate mental health into their priorities.
