Partnering with Local Nonprofits to Expand Temporary Housing for Students in South Chicago

US homelessness up 18% as affordable housing remains out of reach, latest HUD count — Chicago Sun-Times

In February, ChiEAC deepened its focus on addressing housing insecurity by collaborating with local nonprofits to expand temporary housing options for migrant families. We intentionally selected partnerships that aimed to put a roof over people’s heads.

Our goal was, and remains, to facilitate opportunities for stability and a sense of dignity among all students we serve…especially those navigating the immense challenges of starting over in a new country.

Reflecting back on these efforts, I am reminded of the need for a broader commitment to community resilience. By working together, we created pathways for families to transition from unstable shelters to spaces where they could begin to rebuild their lives. Adding social value to the broader social network requires a ripple effect…secure housing provides a foundation that allows families to focus on education, employment, and integration into their new communities.

Collaborating demonstrated to us how partnerships between organizations can create meaningful change and strengthen the social fabric of our city. We are looking forward to maintaining and creating relationships moving forward in 2025 to continuing advancing our mission of serving the most vulnerable students in South Chicago.
