Parents in English Classes Can Better Support Their Children’s English Learning Experience in Education

As more migrants arrive in Chicago, enrollment ticks up at city schools — Chalkbeat

Recognizing that parents are key players in their children’s academic success, we opened our Duolingo x ChiEAC ELL classes tailored specifically for CPS parents in 2024. We invited all interested parents to sessions where they could learn more about our goal of empowering families to take a more active role in their children’s education.

Parents who joined these classes gained more than just practical communication skills. In these interactive meetings, we created a supportive space where they could connect with others navigating similar challenges related to cross-cultural communication.

As they learned, they also shared experiences, tips, and encouragement, transforming the classroom into a community of mutual support.

We feel the impact of these classes reached beyond individual families. By equipping parents with the ability to engage more confidently with teachers, school administrators, and their children’s homework, we helped create stronger bridges between home and school.

For 2025, we are seeking to continue this initiative with an emphasis on the critical role of language in fostering parental involvement and, ultimately, academic success for children.
