How We Can Serve the Needs of Teachers Burning Out Across Educational Institutions
Teaching as a profession, once seen as a noble calling, is now grappling with a crisis that threatens its very stability…and that is burnout. I recently participated in a sociology course where we often discussed how institutions (e.g., education) reflect broader societal values in ways I had not fully wrapped my mind around.
What I realized is that teaching has become a prime example of how undervaluing a profession leads to systemic problems that ripple across society.
From a sociological perspective, the root causes of teacher burnout lie in how we prioritize education compared to other sectors. It was eye-opening to learn how government budgets often favor defense spending or economic stimulus packages over meaningful investments in public education.
It’s no wonder that teachers are leaving classrooms at alarming rates. I actively participated in class discussions that rose awareness about and highlighted multiple perspectives on this gap.
