How One Grant Changed the Future of Our Organization

Nuestro Futuro Awards $370,000 in 2024 Grants to Chicago Nonprofits Focused on Immigration and Early Childhood — The Chicago Community Trust

2024 also marked the beginning of what promises to be a transformative partnership…initial discussions with The Joyce Foundation about grant opportunities to support our educational initiatives and broader mission.

When they began, I was dubious that these conversations could represent an essential step toward expanding our reach and sustaining our work. Less because I felt that The Joyce Foundation was a fraud, and more because I was doubtful they would be able to see the value in the work we do…and also that I would do a horrible job of trying to explain it.

Ultimately, the dialogue between myself and the program officer focused on aligning ChiEAC’s vision with the foundation’s priorities, emphasizing the tangible impact of our programs on housing, education, and community well-being. Crafting proposals for such a distinguished organization required meticulous preparation, ensuring every detail underscored the importance and urgency of our mission. At the end of the call, which lasted well over an hour, I emerged with a clearer sense of how to best communicate the work we are doing to other donors and funders.

Support from agencies and organizations The Joyce Foundation extends far beyond funding…it symbolizes validation and recognition of the critical work we’re doing. Engaging in these discussions reaffirmed our commitment to addressing systemic challenges and opened doors to new possibilities for collaboration, innovation, and growth, further amplifying the reach of our efforts.
