High School Seniors are Expected to Submit Upwards of 20 Applications to Colleges and Universities to Start Classes in Fall 2024

It’s a process that many of us remember all too well. Applying to college was, for many of us, something that took the form of physically writing out with a pen on a piece of paper your information to then hand to another living human being who would then read it — with their eyes — and review it — with their mind.

Now, for me at least, this took place in 1999. Technology was creeping in, and it was nowhere near where we are today. But for most of us, in the fall of our senior year of high school, there was a sense of dread and relief when we submitted our college applications.

My colleague can take it from here…

For today’s student, there is no writing…it is a click, drag, and “submit” transaction that has really lost the personal touch of sitting in the Admissions Office while they literally reviewed your application. A wave of mixed emotions can come when the form(s) are transmitted. There my be a sense of impending dread relative to the outcome. Or perhaps relief because “Thank [insert preferred higher power here] I didn’t have to write another essay.”
