Education Inequities in Technology Access Range from Overreliance to Computer Deserts
Technology has transformed the way we learn, work, and connect, but it hasn’t done so equally. During this fall semester we debated how technology…something so universally impactful…can still exclude so many people in a sociology class I completed this Fall. Reflecting on these discussions, I began to see the digital divide as a technological issue and as a mirror of deeper societal inequalities.
Globally, the digital divide or gaps in access to knowledge and resources related to technology reveals a harsh truth…systemic inequities persist even in the digital age.
Reflecting on our readings, I realized how economic inequality, lack of infrastructure, and government inaction prevent underserved communities from accessing technology.
In one class session, we discussed how some rural areas lack broadband connectivity, while urban centers enjoy high-speed internet as a given. It became clear that this divide isn’t just about hardware but also about access to opportunity — education, job prospects, and social mobility.
