Duolingo x ChiEAC ELL Courses Address Language Barriers to Empower Asylum-Seeking Students

Supporting English Language Learners with Duolingo — Duolingo for Schools

Language is more than a tool…it’s a gateway to opportunity and empowerment. In 2024, we launched the Duolingo x ChiEAC ELL program to help migrant families overcome language barriers that often stand in the way of integration and progress.

To date, we have 114 active students who have logged over 1,000 hours of study time across 4 different sections…truly…we are humbled by these results. All courses are designed by Duolingo with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, offering students and their family a chance to learn English in a supportive, interactive environment.

Our program goes beyond vocabulary or grammar; it was about confidence. Watching parents and children learn side by side was a powerful reminder of the resilience these families bring to every challenge. Many of them coordinated schedules to study and learn together…which was unexpected.

Students shared that they felt out classes became a shared experience, where laughter and determination blended into a collective journey toward understanding. Our initiative demonstrated how accessible language tools can open doors to better communication, deeper community connections, and a sense of belonging that extends beyond the classroom.
